Hard chroming is a very good method of repair but maybe more expensive than just buying new stanchions which are still available

The Amal hints and tips leaflet states Engine goes better if-Throttle is not wide open or air valve is partially closed is caused by weakness

Have you checked the breather hole in the tank cap to make sure it is not blocked?

you can lock the engine up by wedging a piece of steel (maybe an open ended spanner) between the lower teeth of the engine sprocket and the upper teeth of the clutch sprocket. you need to find or cut something just the right length.This is quite a well known method which i believe is called spragging.

The battery gives off oxygen and hydrogen whilst charging. A spark near the top of the battery possibly caused by a loose connection will ignite the gases and often blows the battery to bits

I think the original finish on nuts bolts etc on british bikes of the 50s and 60s was cadmium plate

The oil pump return side has greater capacity than the feed side so oil arriving at the bottom of the crankcases can be returned immediately to the oil tank.It may be possible to drain half a cup from the bottom of the crankcases but this is only when the oil covering the bores/crankcase walls etc h...
