Re: Does ethanol in petrol make it harder to start bike

In my experience every bike has it's own special starting routine. Some love it when you keep throwing fuel at it, others flood at the drop of a hat. Some will need a bit of throttle, others need the throttle closed. There are lots of things to try before you find what a bike wants. Could be there's...

Re: Water in my carb

Thanks Derry. I don't think it's coming from the tank, but getting into the carb itself. I was thinking of a rubber bung in the bellmouth to see if getting in there. I've never had this problem before, but then the 276 is far more basic the carbs on my other bikes.

Water in my carb

Hi all, I have a constant problem with water getting into the amal 276 fitted to my B31. I do live in one of the wettest parts of Ireland but was just wondering if there's anything I can do to prevent it? I don't know how it's getting in, the bike is kept under a cover, but I regularly have to blow ...

Re: BSA starfire, not starting.

Embarrassed to say but all it needed was a new plug. I'm sure the attention to the points, carb etc hasn't been a waste of time but I managed to get a plug (not the right one but close) at a local place and she's starting like a champ. Must have been a very weak spark even though it looked ok to me....

Re: BSA starfire, not starting.

Fairly sure I've the carb cleaned out now. So, back to the ignition system. Think you're right Willpower, new everything and try again.

Re: BSA starfire, not starting.

Thanks for the further replies. I've had a look at the advance/retard and it seems to be working fine. The idle jet is clear but I'm not certain the passage inside the carb is totally clear, I'll have another look at it. There's no air slide fitted and I've tried flooding it with the tickler, a lot,...

Re: BSA starfire, not starting.

Thanks for the replies. I've been swapping the plug with others I have kicking around but a new one would be a good idea. I was cleaning the idle circuit today, I'll go back at it again. It's a bike that's had a hard life by the looks of it, and nothing is really all that good on it. Should a Starfi...

BSA starfire, not starting.

Hi. I’m a bit hesitant to ask because it’s just the age old question “why wont my bike start?”. The bike is a 1968 Starfire that’s been sat up in a shed for several years. It was running when it was parked up. Now it will fire and start intermittently but I haven’t had it running or starting properl...

Re: Amal MkII carb - running Really rich

They might need a good clean. The mark2 amals are over complicated, a simple strip wasn't enough for mine. I couldn't get carb cleaner so I soaked them in coke, rinsed them off and blew them out with an air line. They were fine for years but I left the bike sitting for too long and they seem to have...

Is it an alloy head and iron barrel?
