'74 T100 Daytona erratic shifting

I replaced the layshaft bearing in the kickstart and now I'm having trouble with upshifts. Usually when trying to go from 2nd to 3rd it feels like there is nothing attached to the lever. Sometimes trying again, shifting down into first and making two upshifts, or just fiddling around with it will will make it shift. Randomly, it can be the upshift into any gear that won't go. Downs shift always work fine.

What should I be looking for when I pull it a part ?

Have you tried pushing the lever down a bit before shifting up? The reason I ask is it sounds like the problem I had when one of the little springs that return the lever to its rest position had shortened.
