Matchless G12 forks

Anyone know if Matchless G12 forks were chromed?

When I took mine apart they're just bare (rusty) metal. I'm thinking that because they were completely covered, maybe they didn't go to the expense of chroming? is that correct?

I think you are right they were just steel
and the same for other british manufacturers I believe

I've now confirmed that they were never chromed. As you suggested, this seems to be the general case for most shrouded forks, certainly for the period.

Anyway, I've found what looks to be a very good re-grinding and hard chroming service so I'll see how that turns out.

Hard chroming is a very good method of repair but maybe more expensive than just buying new stanchions which are still available

I did look at replacements but couldn't find anyone who actually has them in stock. The one place I did find with them in stock wanted around £200. That's more than the chroming costs. Plus of course, new would still be UN-chromed.
