indian bullet gearbox issue
Hi I am rebuilding the gearbox on my 500 Indian Bullet. I have fitted the bearing and low gear to the mainshaft sleeve but as the gear is able to slide it touches the bearing. the bearing is tight against the shoulder. there is no spacer shown in any exploded drawings apart from 50's bullets. Is this normal? thanks in advance

Hi folks, long time no speak.
I would say that if the bearing if splined to the shaft it will turn with the inner race of the bearing anyway, so there is no reason for the two not to touch. In this case there would usually be a slightly raised ring on the back of the gear - only a fag paper thick - a similar diameter to the bearing inner race, in order to make sure it is spaced away from the outer race of the bearing, which it certainly should not touch. If that isn't the case then something doesn't sound right.
Cheers Rick
