As an addition to my handpainting a frame I thought you may like to see the continuation, handpainting the tank. Preparation is the same as for the frame, only this time I decided to have the tank shotblasted first as it was in a bit of a state. Once I got it back I gave it a good coat of spray on anti-rust. Following that I gave it a coat of filler primer
There were a few imperfections in the tank so here I made my first and hopefully only mistake. Gus questioned in the Neville the Minsk section if I was wise to use a cellulose putty in filling some of the imperfections. Gus was right and I was wrong, but thats how you learn. The putty did set but as I rubbed it down it got softer inside, so I scraped it off and used ordinary filler to even it out.
Following that I left the tank in the sun for a while, then turned it upside down and painted the underside. Left it whilst I went for a cuppa, then turned it over and painted the top. Only this time I started painting from the base upwards so as to tie in the paint underneath. I still always finished though with an upward stroke. Painted the sides then the top, evening out a few runs as I went. Now leaving it to dry for a couple of days before I do anything else with it. I'm happy with the result, though as I have said elsewhere you won't get a concours finish at this stage, however in a couple of months time I'll give it a good rub down with T Cut and it should bring out a shine as if it had been sprayed. I could T Cut it earlier but I prefer to let it go right off. It'll still look okay on the bike, but I prefer to finish it with a cut back of the paint.
truth is dave I've never used a clear coat yet, however i am thinking of trying it on this one. I'll do it after I TCut it I reckon. Someone recommended Halfords Clear Varnish I think it was called.bsac15ss80 wrote:hi mcnut,

i was wondering if you put a clearcoat of some sort on after you t-cut ?
or do you get the finish your looking for from the t-cutting ?
Nice work McNut. I recently redid my Velo tank using aerosols however instead of using T-Cut, as I would normally, I used a very fine rubbing compound. The results were amazing. I have always found that T-Cut leaves a sort of haze that has to washed or polished out, but the rubbing compound just polishes itself out and gives a fantastic finish. I used one made Abel Auto which available here in France but I know that 3M makes a similar product. I'm sure these will be available at any automotive paint supplier.
