Hi I am Trigg (Mark)

I have ridden modern bikes for many years now. although I haven't since a bike accident in 2012 on my R1. Since this accident, which definitely freaked me out, although I came away relatively unscathed considering. I have always had a thing for old Cars and over the last couple of years I have been buying Classic Bike. Anyhoo the boss has given me permission to get another bike. Which I hope to do in the new year. I am considering a Old British Bike . (I bet you get this a lot!) Now all my experience is with Jap bikes and I understand that owning an old British bike isn't for the mechanically inept. Having said that I would like to find a nice twin that isn't going to require major surgery before every ride. Rather, something I could cut my teeth on that may need a little tinkering.

Are my ideas realistic thus far?

I was thinking of financing up to about 5K.

The bikes I like so far are the Norton Atlas, Goldie. Triumph Bonnie, Sunbeam S8 deluxe for a long time.

I am always open to your considered suggestions. Are there any particular years that should be avoided and years that are considered better? Would you recommend some retailers? I don't wont to buy private as I don't have enough experience with old bikes, at least with a dealer I "should" have some backup.

Hello Mark,

Welcome.

The bikes you list (except the Bonnie if a T140 variant) will probably be over £5k unless you are very, very lucky. Having said that a T140 would not be a bad bike to start with. BSA A65s (650cc) or Triumph 500cc twins (5TA, T100, Daytona) are probably in your ball park as well

Hello Mark,

That looks in good condition in the photos. You should checkout as many sources/examples as you can to see if it is a fair price. As far as I know the Jubilee is no different to a regular model apart from the paint job and does not necessarily command a premium over std. One thing is almost certain (if the bike has no horrendous faults to be discovered) it will not depreciate :D ,

Youles in Manchester have a Jubilee in at £6190 so that one you've linked to would seem reasonably priced.

The BSA A65s are good value for money and most will have had the upgrades by now that improve engine life. The Triumph T140 has a left foot shift if you prefer that. The Triumph 500s are good value and some say they're the best of the Meriden twins. The later unit 500s were really well sorted, and on your budget, that's what I'd get.

where are you?

I would go for a T140, the later the better (meriden)

The E was strangled a bit but can be pepped back up. They detuned it to get through emissions but the E has better switchgear etc.
Don't forget Tigers ands they are often overlooked and there is no difference between a TR7 and T140 unless you go flat out and the Bonnie name adds a few quid
