You might think that the engine looks all right in a custom, but in truth it's still a gutless pile of wank.
Not quite as bad as the execrable GN400 it was 'developed' from though - what a pile of puke that thing was.

The GN looks like Peter Fonda's Monkey bike.

you missed the 's off the end of monkey's !
Although I doubt if even Peter Fonda's monkey would ride a GN400.

Interesting when you think about it - the SR500 (and Japanese market SR400) was ok and the GN400 should've been a contender - but wasn't.

The GN was derived from the SP370 which was very much built down to a price, and really looked it.
A lot of the nasty cheapskate features (such as 6V electrics) made their way across to the GN.
And, as you can see - it really is piss ugly.
The XT500 that was the basis for the SR500 was a vastly superior piece of kit.
The SR wasn't without problems however, the starter motor arrangement had more than it's fair share of 'issues'

Didn't the SR have cooling problems at first too?

The DRs were ok mostly.
