Is there any hope for me?

Unread post by hondapartsman » Mon Apr 14, 2014 11:32 am

It might make you wonder sometimes.
Currently I am getting mildly obsessed with the idea of getting a Yamaha XS360 to restore, or at least have on the road after some work because restoring is not my bag. It would depend upon (1) such a rare machine becoming available, (2) us having moved by then to somewhere I can at least have a decent sized shed again or having come across a cheap garage, (3) me having any money to afford one and of course (4) being allowed to without my wife threatening to kill me, again.
I'm not sure why, maybe it's because they do seem so rare. I really fancy an early one, wire wheels, non speed block paintwork and even drum brakes. At least I have plenty of time to get everything else in place before one's likely to turn up. If I had to I'd settle for the later disc models, or if really pushed an XS400 or even 250.
We'll see, I just needed to share that with someone. Anyone!
By the by, as i can never work out how to upload pictures on to here, or if I ever did have forgotten how have a look on my flickr link below for what I have in mind.

I do, my watch list is always full on bikes which interest me, if only because I wonder if they'll ever sell them at the prices they ask ( and many go round and round, again and again) Part of the fun of even thinking about this is doing a little research though, which has led me to widen my list, as they made bikes with wire wheels and drum brakes right up until 1982 although from 1978 on they were 400's not 360's.

Yes, why not? The only problem will be finding one...
Maybe a "wanted" ad in Classic Bike or Old Bike Mart?
Or even your local paper might turn something up?
I used to do that and got some bargains.
I would put something like " Genuine enthusiast looking for older japanese bike to restore, preferably over 250cc"
I would get offered all sorts of crap but eventually something decent would turn up.
Good luck.

HPM, do it :D

They're garbage but have a certain charm.

Not even the early ones had drum brakes HPM, they all came with discs.

Germany even had a 'one off' race series for them ..................... and for the 400

Thanks Ash, like I said not much chance anyway and I am being a bit specific. There were indeed drum brake ones, but not in the UK. USA yes, Canada, maybe. Yamaha, and Honda, and well all the Japs seem to have done economy versions of all their 400's and 360's late in the seventies and sometimes early in the 80's. These usually came with just kickstart, often no centre stand and with drum brakes at the front. I would attach a picture but I never could get the hang of that , have a look at my flickr page. I'm going to show examples of all I found on there, eventually. If nothing else it's been interesting researching all this. I assume outside the USA etc it was assumed no one was poor enough to need an economy version, would that strike anyone else as odd?

On the subject of US market 400's, not Yamaha but as amusing little video, I think, from the late 70's I guess. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JypVw-z7KhQ" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I think the 400 came out in 74 over here. never saw the model with the fairing. Nice looking young ladies I must say. Back then that is. They be a bunch of old grandmothers now.
In your flicker I do remember the Yammie 360 of that type. The square tank came out in 76 or 77. Back then I ran a 75 XS500 round tank. Yamaha went to the square Italian style in 76 which turned me off. bought a Beemer next then after I wrecked it ran a 74 XS650 for 12 years. The Yamaha specials? Nah.

Thank you for that, it's interesting to hear from someone over there in the original market. I have found other pictures of the deluxe version of that KZ400, it was probably not common even when they were new, I'd not mind betting most people bought the standard version, so no doubt the most basic models were pretty uncommon too, for all the makers. I guess you're right about all those young ladies, and gentleman, it's slightly before my time but even I have grandparenthood looming.
