As I recall the old XR500 had a release built into the kick-start and a separate one, everything from the 185 upwards has a decompressor linked to the kickstart, my CB250Rs's do, although I'm not sure it's really necessary. I assume when people have converted FT's for kick start use they have used a fold up footrest on the right side to clear the starter, like the CB400F did and as did my RS's. I'm not sure if the XBR did, never having had to start one. I'm sure if an FT has had the starter mod done then it ought to be much more reliable and I'm sure most of them had the mod. I'm sure it can depend also on the climate, where it's cold the starter has to work harder.

I'd need a decompressor to use a kickstart on a large capacity single. My ankle's not strong enough since I smashed it up. I struggled to kick over an 860GTS Ducati.

I think you do well with that, I've never kicked over anything bigger than my 250 single, who knows maybe one day I'll get the chance to try. My wish list includes an SR400/500 maybe one day.

i had an sr500 and it was a doddle to start, you just opened the choke, gave a pump non the throttle, held the decomperssor and pushed the engine over once on the kickstarter, then you pushed it down till the little dot appeared in a small glass window on the end of the cam. then give it a big swinging kick and it would start every time. easiest starting single i ever owned. my bloody m21 has tried to cripple me many a time!

dittos with the XT and the sight glass but I don't need it as I go by feel. Learned the basics in the early 70's with a 441 Victor.
It would be nice to have a compression release on the T25T though. To just kick it through the clutch slips so I have to ease it just a teeny bit past TDC then go by the procedure. Starts first or second kick though.

Isn't there something just so satisfying in kicking a bike to life, something you don't get just pushing the starter.

It's nice to have someone agree with me.
By the way, as an update, a semblance of sense has returned to me. I now have in mind either CB or CL175, and selling my XJ600 as I really don't have much use for it anymore. Anyway, I might soon find that, when i get back to working, that I'll not need to ride anymore unless I really want to. My 250's can do that. Not that it'll pay for the CB or CL but it'll help. I do at least already have a manual for a 175 as I had one many years ago. I've got now to fancy the idea of a bike I can have a black and silver number plate on as well, legitimately, unlike the cafe'd Hinckley bonnie I saw today when my wife and I were out for a ride.

Yup, sure is.

I used to like kicking over the Morini because I was used to it I suppose. It didn't have especially high compression. The GT doesn't have a lot of compression either so it isn't too hard. It's nice having a bike that doesn't rely on an electric start.

You're right it is, I have decided to sell my XJ - and I hate selling bikes. I'm finding that somehow I am just not getting enough strength back to feel safe on it and anyway good piece of kit though it is it has to many little electrical boxes on for my liking and yes, I am getting bored with it and hardly using it. The time is right as if all goes as I expect when I get back to work it will be elsewhere and I'll no longer have to think about riding to work unless I want to. Then the only electric start only bike I'll have is the VT, which would always be an exception and which is just that much slimmer and lighter ( well feels that way) than the XJ. But there is a replacement on the way, well if all goes to plan. I will soon have a CL175K6 as a project to get running again. I'll start another thread for that once I have the beastie here and see what needs doing to it. I'm hoping I'll not regret it and be able to do the work I need in the back yard here.
