Triumph 1971 650 conical hub type

Hello all I'm new to this group and would like some advice. A friend is selling a triumph 650 1971 in very nice condition he is to old to start it now. He offered it to me for £4500 What do you think. All comments greatfully received.

Really hard to say

The brakes have a bit of a reputation but some say they can be tamed
The 71 will be an oil in frame that at first was very high and later bikes were lowered

Gearchange will be on the "wrong " side if you are used to modern bikes of jap

Condition needs to be good
As do your mechanical skills or you know someone

The brakes are bloody awful! The OIF handling is good if my A65 is typical. Ride with care and enjoy!

Rather and different ride to a more modern bike I'm sure although I doubt I'll ever find out for myself.

1971 TR6C
I have a 1971 "high frame" Triumph TR6C OIF - it has been "bonnevillised" with twin carbs etc.

Regarding the brakes - yes they are terrible as standard, however it is possible to fit extended actuator arms which turn them into reasonable stoppers - certainly not on a par with a modern disk brake, but less heart stopping than the standard actuators. If you keep them adjusted (easy 10 minute job) they are survivable. Cost for DIY conversion about 100 quid.

Otherwise I love mine - it's been totally reliable so far, it goes well, handles well and in my view looks magnificent.

One other notable issue is the crapola gear indexing system fitted to the 1971-2 twins - the terribad leaf spring gear indexer. These wear out and weaken giving rise to jumping out of 2nd/3rd sometimes under load - and sometimes difficulty in selecting neutral. It's an easy fix as long as that is the problem - just fit a new leaf spring. You can retrofit the much better plunger indexing system but that is not a job for the feint hearted. No point as the leaf spring doesn't cost much and replacement is reasonably easy - can be done with the motor in situ.

I am biased but I can recommend the OIFs - they apparently had teething troubles but from the saddle of mine I haven't really been hit by them apart from the above mentioned. An additional advantage is that they are relatively cheap compared to pre 1971 twins - and the oil tank cannot spilt on you.

A lovely looking machine, Dave. The conical hub brakes never had a good press but like all 2ls brakes attention to set up and regular maintenance will get the best out of them.
