The illigitimate love child of Lady Chater Lea and Mr Rudge

Unread post by steve » Mon Jun 08, 2009 11:15 pm

Following on from my "Just aquired" I have now started to pull a plan together. The twin port JAP 350 motor turns out to have been a spare that came with a Rudge Python, I am still hoping to get some more of the spares stash that came with it ;) In the mean time I have been sorting out my own hoard of pre war bits n bobs and have looked out a 3 speed Sturmey Archer hand change gear box, a phone call to a dealer friend down in Wales sourced a front frame which I believe to be from a 1920's Chater Lea sports single. I have spoken to another dealer who has a rear frame section which has the mounts for a S A gearbox on it so with a bit of luck and a welder  I shold be able to sort out a complete frame. The plan is to build a vintage sprinter/sporting single along the lines of Brooklands racers of around the late 1920's
Here is my current want list

late 1920's girder fork and front wheel (or just hub and brake plate) to suit
rear hub brake plate, again late 1920's
magneto to suit 1929 JAP single
carb to suit
JAP 350cc cam followers, push rods, valve gear

heres the frame

difficult, in the good old days, if you were a bit of a lad you would buy a frame with a log book from a bike of a similar engine size and vintage, then change the engine number with DVLA to suit the donor motor. Nowadays, big brother seems to be more vigilant to this sort of anti social activity.

It seems that the most heinous crime nowadays is to undermine the bureaucracy of this sceptred isle

bureaucratic anarchy rools ;)

frame and motor together for the first time, will need to take the magneto out to the front,as per Chater Lea of the time, but with some 21" wheels I can get the motor low enough in the frame to make room for the valve gear

Looks like and interesting project that! I'll enjoy watching this come together! Good luck with it. Jez
