The popular West Country circuit, Castle Combe, Grand National Meeting, promoted by NG Road Racing, on 21st and 22nd June played host to three rounds of the Bonhams sponsored Lansdowne Classic Championship.

The whole weekend, offered ideal racing conditions, with warm sunshine, little wind and a dry track. Duncan Fitchett, GB Access Norton, headed the Time Qualifying by the narrowest margin of 0,009 seconds from Mike Edwards Ripley Land Matchless G50, with Michael Russell, Richard Adams Norton Manx, completing the front row.

Race 1 on Saturday afternoon predictably, was a tight battle between Duncan Fitchett and Mike Edwards. Edwards briefly snatch the lead on lap 2 but by lap 4 Fitchett had recovered the lead and lead to the flag in the near 15 mile 8 lapper. Alex Sinclair, CSC Racing Norton Manx, had a steady third place race to complete the podium.

Race 2 on Sunday morning saw Mike Edwards lead from the start, with Duncan Fitchett’s challenge fading when he dropped out on lap 3. Michael Russell came second having started on the second row, with a creditable third place going to Glen English, Works Racing Works Norton, having worked his way through the field from row 3 of the grid.

Sunday afternoon Race 3 saw the battle between Fitchett and Edwards go all the way. From pole Fitchett led for the first two laps but was then headed by Edwards who finally won 1.5 seconds. He also broke the Class Lap Record set by Fitchett in race 1 with a time of 1:21.480, 81.73mph. Alex Sinclair came third.

NG Road Racing wish to thank the Lansdowne Classics for a nostalgic return to the racing of their origins at airfield circuits in the early 1970s, when a grid full of 500 singles sounded more like a Lancaster bomber taking off. The turn out and preparation of the machines was amazing and a credit to all concerned. The Club would be delighted to entertain the Lansdowne’s again if they can be included in one of our future programme.
